School Admission Service
Essays, Application & Résumé
As school admissions are now more competitive, the admissions’ essay has become a crucial component of a student’s application and can even determine where a student might go to boarding school or college. ARÊTE Educators has several years of experience working with students on a variety of application essays.
Students begin the process by reading and discussing several good personal and college essays. We also ask them to critique a few bad ones to compare what works and doesn’t work. After reviewing the organizational structure and general guidelines for personal essays, we then explore how students can present themselves in ways that would make an admissions’ officer want to know them personally. Students learn how to “show” and not “tell” too much as they recall key events. They quickly understand that a vivid, enticing opening will capture the reader’s attention immediately and set the tone for the entire essay. They also discover how to write in their own voice without sounding sentimental or overly impressive. Our goal is to help students get to a place where they can reflect honestly on their personal qualities and experiences and write a clear, well-crafted, non-academic essay.
We also help students complete their applications and craft an up-to-date résumé that reflects their strengths and interests.
International Student Service
Our International Student Service offers two distinct programs. The first provides a comprehensive advisory service that prepares clients for admission to an American independent school or university. This includes standardized test preparation and instruction in vocabulary and grammar development, reading comprehension and writing fundamentals.
We also support clients through every aspect of the admissions’ process, including the application, and help them find the right school that fits their needs and interests.
The second option helps families transition back to the United States after living abroad. We offer adults assistance with writing cover letters and revamping résumés. We also provide their children with help in the school admissions’ process with our School Enrichment & Readiness Program. Based on our extensive classroom experience in competitive primary and secondary school environments, this program provides several advantages for students.
- One-on-one time with the instructor
- Flexible pacing
- The ability to work both independently and in small groups
- Individualized reading programs
- Individual writing and research projects
- Immediate peer and teacher feedback
Our program also offers age-appropriate literature studies that include instruction in grammar and vocabulary development, reading comprehension and writing. Students who like exploring their ideas and sharing them with others will thrive in this kind of intensive program.
